About Herbal Therapeutics

Arabic Herbal Medicine

The intersection between plants and people began long before recorded history. The use of plants as medicine evolved as a natural result of our relationship with our environment. Today the practice of herbal medicine maintains much of its traditional roots yet enjoys the benefits of modern science to supports its use and efficacy.

In the early 19th century as methods of chemical analysis became available, scientists began extracting compounds from traditionally used plant medicines for investigation into their active constituents. Scientists began making their own versions of these active constituents and thus, the world of pharmaceuticals was born. The commonly utilized pharmaceuticals such as aspirin, digoxin, and pseudoephedrine all find their roots in plant medicines.

The strength of herbs rests in their various mechanisms that support and nurture the body’s innate healing capacity. When taking herbs you are connecting not only with the chemistry of the plant, but you are also waking up aspects of the body and shifting them back to a place of “health” or “wholeness.” Our bodies remember these plants. Our relationship travels back into the core of our ancestral DNA. When we take herbs we add back pieces of the puzzle that we forgot we lost.

Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines as their primary method of healthcare. In the United States there is increasing public dissatisfaction with the cost of pharmaceutical medications and a movement back to a more natural and organic products. Interestingly, in Germany, roughly 600 to 700 plant-based medicines are available and are prescribed by approximately 70% of German physicians. The movement seems to be in favor of herbal medicines and as the United States matures, we will see this shift move into the medical establishments.

Clinical Herbalism

Medical Herbalist

In remembering our herbal roots, we see that many cultures, all over the world, used similar plants for similar ailments. We see the patterns and parallels in their systems of diagnosis and treatment. Herbalists use both the indigenous wisdom of our ancestors, coupled with modern research to find the best herbs for their clients. The matching of people to plants is both an art and a science utilized by herbalists throughout the world.

Plants offer many different forms of medicine that the herbalist can utilize. Depending on which part of the plant contains the active constituents, the herbalist carefully chooses the best part of the plant for making medicine. Some plants offer there medicines in the leaves and flowers, while others hold them deeply in their roots. Also, depending on how these constituents are best retrieved, the herbalist chooses either a water based or alcohol based method of extraction. Therefore, your herbalist may choose a tea (water based) or a tincture (alcohol based) method of administration.
